Delta State Government has called on every community in the state to take ownership of government-completed projects by guarding against indiscriminate waste disposal and vandalization in their domains.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ejiro Tommy Jamani made the call, today, during the inspection of the completed Owanta, Ukwu-Nzu, and Obomkpa Erosion Rehabilitation projects of Delta State Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project sponsored by the Delta State Government in partnership with the World Bank.
The Commissioner who was in the company of the Project Coordinator of Delta State NEWMAP, Mr. Benedict Nwaokocha, said the protection of such projects against indiscriminate waste disposal and vandalization became necessary to justify the huge government investment channeled to uplift the infrastructural and socio-economic development of their communities.
According to him, the present administration under the watch of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was desirous to complete all ongoing projects in the state and initiate new ones that are dear to Deltans.
He said the harvest of projects commissioned during the 100 days in office of Governor Oborevwori’s administration justified his readiness for the all-inclusive administration he promised Deltans, adding that he would translate his MORE agenda for the betterment of the state.
While commending the quality of the job done on the completed erosion rehabilitation projects inspected, the Commissioner particularly called on the people of Owanta Community to desist from turning the constructed stormwater channels into waste dumps as any person caught would face the wrath of the law.
Mr. Jamani who also inspected the flood site along Idumuje Road in Issele-Uku in Aniocha North Local Government Area, urged the residents to embrace proper waste disposal mechanisms that could promote sanitation and a healthy environment.
The State Project Coordinator of NEWMAP, Mr. Benedict Nwaokocha, said the degree of intervention was scalable from one site to another.
Mr. Nwaokocha said the agency was able to achieve the projects in record time following the engagements of standardized and reputable construction firms.
A community youth leader in the Ukwu-Nzu Community, Mr. Scissor Torichukwu, described the completed NEWMAP projects and waste disposal tricycles procured for the disposal of waste in benefitting communities as fantastic projects cherished by the people.
