Rehabilitation/Construction of Obomkpa Erosion Site, Obomkpa

The Obomkpa flood plain and gully erosion watershed site is located in Aniocha North LGA, Delta State with coordinates of Latitude N 6° 23′ 6.6″ and Longitude E 6° 28′ 58″ with estimated length and depth of 2500m and 6m respectively. The site is located in a low density populated area with the gully development at the terminal of the major road into the town. With the rate of expansion, the gully is categorized as severe. The gully is said to have started over eight years ago as a result of the heavy drain from various uncontrolled adjoining streets drainages into the main terminal road of the town. The width at the gully head is put at 29ft, depth is 30ft, and gradient of the slope is 0.10. At the middle course of the gully, the width is 33.01ft; depth is 22.30ft with slope gradient of 0.17. At the gully site few houses are threatened while large expanse of agricultural land has been devastated.

The area is drained by Iyocha River (popularly known as White stream) which is at a level of approximately 225m above sea level. The severe flooding and erosion problems experienced in this area has been investigated by concerned environment personnel and noted as one of the ecological priority zones for flooding and erosion control.
